This burgundy moss is commonly found blanketing small areas In bogs, In rainforests, and In heathlands.
It is average-sized, growing up to 3 inches (8 cm) tall. It forms in thick clumps, and is extremely rigid.
When mature, emerald shield-shaped capsules grow at the end of elongated, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the early winter to release thousands of spores.

The trunk and branches are covered in large spikes.
It is suitable for creating fine, soft textiles
