Ancient Redwood

Tree type: Coniferous (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This small tree grows up to 2 meters (6.6 feet) tall and lives for over 2,000 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 2786 years old. It is very susceptible to disease and insect infestation.

It has a slender, wavy trunk covered in rough, light brown bark, and inside, the hard wood is black with white speckles.

The sparse amount of branches trail down to the ground, with hundreds of twigs covered with small bunches of large, red needles. The needles themselves are delicate.

In late summer it produces giant, slate aril (seeds with fleshy covers).

The roots are shallow and widely spread, and overall the tree is rigid and weak, and breaks apart easily.

Forests of this species feature well-spaced trees, with the space between them filled with thick undergrowth.

It absorbs an exceptionally large amount of water each day.
