This yellow moss is commonly found growing in large clumps On rotten logs.
It is average-sized, growing up to 6 inches (15 cm) tall. It forms in sparse patches, and is extremely strong.
When mature, emerald crescent-shaped capsules grow at the end of short, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the mid-autumn to release millions of spores; it does not cause many allergic reactions.

It is said to be able to live for hundreds of years.
