Copperfern

This short caudiciform grows up to 1 foot (30.5 cm) tall. The asymmetrical stem is orange-yellow, and is covered in sharp spines. The straight, light grey trunk can grow to as much as 1 foot (30.5 cm) in diameter in the middle. Its copper branches are tall, rigid and upright and start growing three quarters of the way up the stem.

The small bunches of wavy-edged, thick leaves are found in sky blue, subtle red and black varieties. They are robust, and do not detach easily.

It is quick growing, taking 2 months to reach maturity. Once mature, several flowers with each petal a slightly different shade of muted orange grow at the top, reappearing once every 5 years. The flower head is largely flat with handfuls of raised narrow petals. It has a strong scent that smells like perfume.

The caudiciform's skin is delicate, the caramel flesh is rough, and the crimson sap is thin.
