This red moss is commonly found blanketing large areas In damp forests.
It is big, growing up to 6 inches (15 cm) tall. It forms in extensive patches and they are exceptionally hardy, and is extremely frail; it struggles more than most during dry spells.
When mature, emerald crescent-shaped capsules grow at the end of long, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the early summer to release dozens of spores.

Once on fire, it burns very quickly.
