This burgundy moss is commonly found growing in medium-sized clumps On rotten logs.
It is small, growing up to 2 inches (5 cm) tall. It forms in extensive patches, and is overwhelmingly durable.
When mature, emerald kidney-shaped capsules grow at the end of short, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the early winter to release millions of spores; it can cause allergic reactions.

It is very rare outside of a particular area.
It is extremely resistant to fire damage.
It comes in 47 varieties.
It is suitable for use as a construction material
