Copper Starflower
Flower type: Annual (Sheds its leaves in winter)This small flower grows up to 2 inches (5 cm) tall. Its copper stem is wispy and straight, and the large, copper leaves are wispy with irregular edges. Many leaves grow at the base of the stem, and more leaves alternate on the stem from about halfway up, up to the flower head.
A single giant flower sits at the end of the stem. The flowers are 3 cm (1.2 inches) wide, with petals that are brown in the center, olive in the middle and light brown at the edges. The flower head is shaped like a star with 22 raised, narrow petals. They detach easily.
It has a scent that varies in strength that smells like pineapple, and it has very little pollen; it can cause severe allergic reactions. It is a self-pollinator.
