Blackberry

This colossal fruit tree grows up to 71 feet (21.6 meters) tall and lives for up to 35 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 38 years old. It is very susceptible to disease and insect infestation.

It has a flexible, curved trunk covered in thin, wrinkled, dark green bark, and inside, the very hard wood is dark brown.

The numerous branches are short and thick and are covered with handfuls of giant, 9 pointed leaves with toothed edges. The leaves themselves are a shade of black that gradient shifts to green at the top.

In early spring, it produces several small, blue blossoms with stiff, pointed petals with a tube-like floral cup. They are sturdy and have no scent.

In mid-summer it produces tiny, oval fruit. The rubbery beige skin is thin and edible when cooked; it is sweet, and the soft ashy green flesh is sour and savoury and juicy. The grey seeds are tiny and are scattered throughout the fruit.

The roots are shallow and widely spread, and overall the tree is sturdy, flexible, and difficult to uproot or break.

Forests of this species feature well-spaced trees, with patches of undergrowth between them.
