Indigo

This short fruit tree grows up to 9 feet (2.7 meters) tall and lives for up to 35 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 51 years old. It is very susceptible to disease and insect infestation.

It has a thick, twisting trunk covered in hard, knobbly, silver bark, and inside, the very light wood is light brown.

The abundance of branches trail down across the ground and are covered with copious amounts of miniature, pleated leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are intense yellow and white.

In early spring, it produces dozens of large, indigo blossoms with oval-shaped petals with a trumpet-shaped floral cup. They fall easily and have a weak scent that smells like cotton.

In early summer it produces tiny, broad, flat fruit. The crispy blue skin is stretchy and sweet, and the slightly crunchy ashy green flesh is sour and syrupy. The ashy green seeds are tiny and are scattered throughout the fruit.

The roots are shallow and grow straight down, and overall the tree is sturdy and difficult to uproot.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together, with clear space between them.
