Blue Cuppetal

Flower type: Annual (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This small flower grows up to 1 inch (3 cm) tall. Its brown stems grow from the base of the plant in bunches of 7 and are thin and straight, and split into dozens of branching stems a quarter of the way up, and the tiny, bronze or caramel leaves are circular with smooth edges. Many leaves grow at the base of the stem, and more leaves alternate on the stem from about halfway up, up to the flower head.

A single large flower sits at the end of the stem. The flowers are 8 cm (3.1 inches) wide, with petals that are indigo on the underside and sky blue on the top. The flower head is shaped like a cup made up of 10 widely spaced, round-tipped petals. They fall easily.

It has a mildly strong scent that smells like new books, and it has very little pollen. It is pollinated by a small species of bird.
