Violet

Flower type: Biennial (Stores water in its stem)

This small flower grows up to 2 inches (5 cm) tall. Its gray stem is thick and splits into 9 branching stems a quarter of the way up, and the giant, blue leaves are shield-shaped with tattered edges. Many leaves grow at the base of the stem, and more leaves alternate on the stem from about halfway up, up to the flower head.

Two small flowers sit at the end of the stem. The flowers are 11 cm (4.3 inches) wide, with solid violet petals decorated with crimson lines and a sky blue central disk. The flower head is made up of several petals in raised layers. They detach easily.

It has a weak scent that smells like pine needles, and it has an average amount of pollen. It is a self-pollinator, but is also visited by some specific types of insect.

It out-competes most other plants for nutrients and light.
