Red Velvet

Succulent type: Caudiciform (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This short caudiciform grows up to 10 feet (3.0 meters) tall. The very thin stem is green and red, and is covered in copious amounts of flexible dark grey spines. The thick, gnarled, subtle orange trunk can grow to as much as 10 feet (3.0 meters) in diameter. Its moss green branches are very short and thin.

The irregular-edged, broad, flat leaves are bronze on the sides and light brown at the center. They are resilient, and do not detach easily.

It is steady-growing, taking 3 years to reach maturity. Once mature, and only under the right conditions, a handful of flowers, with cyan petals and a yellow center, grow at the top, reappearing after 9 years, but only when the conditions are right again. The flower head is an uncoordinated mess of up to 10 curved petals. It has a delicate scent that smells like rotten eggs.

The caudiciform's skin is thin, the dark grey flesh is sticky, and the beige sap is thin.

It is suitable for making strong rope
It is possible to grow it from cuttings.
It has impressive regenerative properties.
