Watermelon Tree

Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This short fruit tree grows up to 7 feet (2.1 meters) tall and lives for up to 25 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 59 years old. It is susceptible to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a long and flexible, straight trunk covered in paper-thin, wrinkled, light gray bark, and inside, the light wood is burgundy-brown.

The sparse amount of branches trail down to the ground and are covered with copious amounts of tiny, very thin leaves with serrated edges. The leaves themselves are dark brown and cyan.

In early spring, it produces lots of small, dark brown blossoms with fan-like petals. They detach easily and have a scent that varies in strength that smells like cheese.

In mid-summer it produces tiny, circular fruit. The smooth grey skin is tough and sweet, and the crunchy cream flesh is sour and oily. The crimson seeds are tiny and are located in the centre of the fruit.

The roots spread far and go deep underground, and overall the tree is sturdy, flexible, and difficult to uproot or break.

Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with patches of undergrowth between them.

It makes a distinctive sound when the wind blows through it.
