Emerald
Succulent type: Stem succulent (Stores water in its stem)This small cactus grows up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) tall. It splits randomly along the body to form 4 very narrow, elongated stems. Each stem is emerald, and is covered in many rigid olive spines.
It is slow growing, taking 7 years to reach maturity. Once mature, a handful of flowers, with petals that are gold in the center, violet in the middle and vibrant red at the edges, grow at the top, reappearing once every 3 years. The flower head is shaped like a trumpet made up of 9 tightly layered, narrow petals. It has the faintest scent that smells like grass cuttings.
The cactus's skin is rock-hard, the pale blue flesh is waxy, and the indigo sap is thin.
The colour changes depends on whether the soil is acidic or alkaline.
It is suitable for creating tough, hard-wearing textiles
It is frequently struck by lightning.
