Bronzeberry

Shrub type: Deciduous (Stores water in its stem)

This average-sized shrub grows up to 4 feet (1.2 meters) tall and lives for around 18 years. It is very resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has several slender, slanted stems covered in rough, light brown bark, and the wood inside is pale yellow.

The branches are short, rigid and upright with dozens of twigs that and are covered with large amounts of miniature, V-shaped, leaves with tattered edges. The leaves themselves are solid green or lilac, with vibrant orange edges, frail and crispy.

In late spring it produces a handful of large, cream blossoms with sickle shaped petals. They are sturdy and have a mildly strong scent that smells like cigarette smoke.

In late autumn small broad, flat fruits ripen. The rough gentle blue skin is peel-able and inedible, and the slightly crunchy bronze flesh is bitter and syrupy. The intense green seeds are tiny and are located in the centre of the fruit.

It is suitable for creating tough, hard-wearing textiles
Once on fire, it burns very quickly.
