Copperwood

Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in its stem)

This small tree grows up to 4 meters (13.1 feet) tall and lives for decades, with the oldest known specimen being around 182 years old. It is somewhat resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a branched, wonky trunk covered in fine, smooth, light gray bark, and inside, the medium-dense wood is copper-coloured.

The small bunches of branches are short, rigid and upright and are covered with sparse amounts of smooth, miniature, pleated leaves with tattered edges. The leaves themselves are generally slate.

In early spring, it produces balls of small, olive blossoms with oval-shaped petals with a trumpet-shaped floral cup. They are hardy and have a delicate scent that smells like sugar.

In late summer it forms small, sky blue aril (seeds with fleshy covers).

The roots spread far and go deep underground, and overall the tree is rigid and brittle.

Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with patches of undergrowth between them.

It is suitable for creating flexible, durable textiles
All parts of the bine are edible.
