Flower type: Perennial (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This average-sized flower grows up to 1.8 feet (56 cm) tall. Its yellow-green and orange-yellow stems grow in bunches of 3 and are very thin and straight, and the huge, lime green leaves are pleated with smooth edges. The leaves grow from the base and are the same length as the stem.

Each stem splits 5 to 9 times; a single medium-sized flower grows at the end of each split. The flowers are 42 cm (16.5 inches) wide, with petals that are dark grey on the underside and vivid red on the top. The flower head is made up of 11 petals in raised layers. They are sturdy.

It has a scent whose strength depends on external factors, such as soil quality and rain frequency that smells like sugar, and it has very little pollen, but can cause allergic reactions. It is pollinated by insects and is enjoyed by several specific types of insect.


It is almost impossible to grow from cuttings.
