Violet Starflower

Flower type: Biennial (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This short flower grows up to 4 inches (10 cm) tall. Its violet stems grow from the base of the plant in bunches of 4 and are wispy and straight, and split into many branching stems at the top, and the miniature, copper leaves are dark yellow-green on the underside and are perforated with toothed edges. 4 leaves grow at the base of the stem.

Hundreds of giant flowers grow in a bunch at the end of the stem. The flowers are 3 cm (1.2 inches) wide, with petals that are generally violet; each flower tends to be a variation of this colour. The flower head is shaped like a star with 8 raised, round-tipped petals. They detach easily.

It has a powerful scent that smells like cinnamon, and it has an average amount of pollen; it does not cause many allergic reactions. It is pollinated by insects , but only one species in particular.
