Turquoise Fanflower

Flower type: Perennial (Grows upwards by clinging to almost any surface.)

This small flower grows up to 4 inches (10 cm) tall. Its bronze stems grow from the base of the plant in bunches of 4 and are thin and straight, and split into many branching stems three quarters of the way up, and the miniature, copper leaves are black on the underside and are fan-like with smooth edges. Many leaves grow at the base of the stem, and more leaves grow in pairs along the length of the stem.

Several small flowers grow in a bunch at the end of the stem. The flowers are 6 cm (2.4 inches) wide, with petals that are generally turquoise; each flower tends to be a variation of this colour. The flower head is an uncoordinated mess of up to 40 petals. They fall easily.

It has an overpowering scent that smells like fish, and it has an average amount of pollen. It is pollinated by a small species of bird, but is also visited by one species of insect in particular.

It is suitable for creating tough, hard-wearing textiles
