Spiceberry Tree

Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in its leaves)

This large fruit tree grows up to 36 feet (11.0 meters) tall and lives for up to 25 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 26 years old. It is very resistant to disease but is susceptible to destructive insect infestation.

It has a wide, crooked trunk covered in hard, ridged, light brown bark, and inside, the flexible wood is pale yellow.

The excessive amount of branches are tall, rigid and upright and are covered with small amounts of giant, long, narrow leaves with jagged edges. The leaves themselves are found in gold, peach and crimson varieties.

In early spring, it produces many clusters of small, white blossoms with 3 pointed petals with a tube-like floral cup. They detach easily and have an intense scent that smells like cheese.

In late summer it produces very large, pentagon-shaped fruit. The leathery amber skin is tough and edible when boiled; it is spicy, and the very soft white flesh is spicy and salty and very juicy. The hazel seeds are tiny and are bunched at the top of the fruit.

The roots are shallow and widely spread, and overall the tree is rigid and brittle.

Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with the space between them filled with thick undergrowth.

It out-competes most other plants for nutrients and light.
