Hazelberry Tree

Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Sheds its leaves in winter)

This average-sized fruit tree grows up to 14 feet (4.3 meters) tall and lives for up to 25 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 44 years old. It is very susceptible to disease and insect infestation.

It has a very thick, wonky trunk covered in thin, cracked, black bark, and inside, the very dense wood is yellow-brown.

The excessive amount of branches are short, thin and wispy and are covered with small amounts of tiny, stiff, pointed leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are pink and gold.

In early spring, it produces dozens of large, hazel blossoms with spear shaped petals. They are sturdy and have an intense scent that smells like fresh linen.

In mid-autumn it produces small, slender, 3 pointed fruit. The waxy peach skin is stretchy and edible when boiled; it is extremely sweet, and the slightly crunchy beige flesh is savoury and very dry. The hazel seeds are tiny and are located in the centre of the fruit.

The roots are shallow and grow straight down, and overall the tree is sturdy and difficult to uproot.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together densely, with patches of undergrowth between them.
