Desert Sunflower

Flower type: Perennial (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This large flower grows up to 3.9 feet (1.2 meters) tall. Its emerald and orange-yellow stem is wispy and splits into 3 branching stems three quarters of the way up, and the miniature, yellow-green leaves are needle-like with smooth edges. 15 leaves grow at the base of the stem.

Each stem splits 2 to 4 times; a single small flower grows at the end of each split. The flowers are 75 cm (29.5 inches) wide, with solid brown petals decorated with peach lines and a deep purple central disk. The flower head is an uncoordinated mess of 15 curved petals. They are very delicate.

It has a scent that varies in strength that smells like misty mornings, and it has lots of pollen, but it does not cause any allergic reactions. It is pollinated by a small species of bird, but is enjoyed by several specific types of insect.

Several parts of the creeper have medicinal properties.
