Purplewood

Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This short tree grows up to 2 meters (6.6 feet) tall and lives for decades, with the oldest known specimen being around 109 years old. It is very resistant to disease but is susceptible to destructive insect infestation.

It has a stocky, angular trunk covered in fine, cracked, dark brown bark, and inside, the dense wood is black with white speckles.

The branches are short stubs and are covered with large amounts of leathery, miniature, perforated leaves with rounded edges. The leaves themselves are solid grey with subtle purple splotches.

In late summer it forms large, slate, spiky-shelled seeds.

The roots form a tightly packed ball, and overall the tree is sturdy and rigid.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together densely, with grassy ground between them.

The grass is sweet and overwhelmingly non-toxic and while grains are sweet and very toxic.
It is suitable for creating flexible, durable textiles
The sap is hazel.
