It takes 4 months for the red stems to mature, by which point they have tangled themselves into thick mats with a diameter of 3 cm (1.2 inches) and remain soft and fleshy.
The wispy, clammy leaves reach up to 3 inches (8 cm) in length. They are pink at the bottom and vivid blue with lime zig-zags at the top, and have smooth edges.
During late spring, the bine produces handfuls of average cream flowers.
It makes a strong and sturdy building material.
