Graystem
Flower type: Biennial (Stores water in its stem)This modest-sized flower grows up to 1.6 feet (48 cm) tall. Its gray-green stems grow from the base of the plant in bunches of 7 and are thick and straight, and split into dozens of branching stems a quarter of the way up, and the giant, cream or pink leaves are spear shaped with irregular edges. Many leaves grow along the entire length of the stem.
A single medium-sized flower sits at the end of the stem. The flowers are 16 cm (6.3 inches) wide, with petals that are gold in the center, sky blue in the middle and dark grey at the edges. The flower head is shaped like a cube made up of 18 widely spaced, narrow petals. They fall easily.
It has a delicate scent that smells like new books, and it has a modest amount of pollen; it can cause severe allergic reactions. It is pollinated by the wind, but is also visited by a small species of bird.
It is frequently struck by lightning.
