Red-Edged Needleflower

This small flower grows up to 4 inches (10 cm) tall. Its green stem is very thick, and the huge, red leaves are needle-like with smooth edges. The leaves grow in pairs along the length of the stem.

Hundreds of small flowers grow in drooping bunches like grapes. The flowers are 2 cm (0.8 inches) wide, with petals that are olive in the center, green in the middle and caramel at the edges. The flower head is shaped like a tube made up of handfuls of tightly layered, round-tipped petals. They are very delicate.

It has a soft scent that smells like onion, and it has a modest amount of pollen. It is pollinated by a small species of bird.
