Indigo

This massive fruit tree grows up to 67 feet (20.4 meters) tall and lives for up to 20 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 48 years old. It is very susceptible to disease and insect infestation.

It has a sturdy, straight trunk covered in paper-thin, waxy, silver and white bark, and inside, the hard wood is black.

The branches are long, thin and wispy and are covered with copious amounts of small, spear shaped leaves with serrated edges. The leaves themselves are generally blood red.

In early spring, it produces handfuls of medium-sized, black blossoms with broad, flat petals with a trumpet-shaped floral cup. They are sturdy and have a fairly strong scent that smells like apple.

In early summer it produces , long, straight fruit. The hairy hazel skin is tough and edible when cooked; it is sweet, and the crunchy indigo flesh is sweet and juicy. The red seeds are large and are scattered throughout the fruit.

The roots are shallow and grow straight down, and overall the tree is rigid and weak, and breaks apart easily.

Forests of this species feature well-spaced trees, with the space between them filled with thick undergrowth.
