It is very resistant to destructive insect infestation but susceptible to disease.
It has a thick, curved trunk covered in paper-thin, wrinkled, brown-green speckled bark, and inside, the light wood is pale yellow.
The small bunches of branches are short stubs and are covered with handfuls of covered in fine hairs, huge, stiff, pointed leaves with jagged edges. The leaves themselves are green and brilliant green.
In late summer it forms large, azure berries.
The roots are shallow and widely spread, and overall the tree is rigid and brittle.
Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with clear space between them.
It is almost impossible to grow from cuttings.
It is suitable for creating fine, soft textiles
The seeds are toxic to people but not to certain animals.
