This brown moss is commonly found blanketing giant areas In moorlands, and On rotten logs.
It is short, growing up to 2 inches (5 cm) tall. It forms in thick clumps and they spread and grow quickly, and is extremely robust.
When mature, emerald heart-shaped capsules grow at the end of long, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the early winter to release dozens of spores; it can cause severe allergic reactions.
