This red moss is commonly found growing in giant clumps On rotten logs.
It is large, growing up to 9 inches (23 cm) tall. It forms in thin clumps and they are exceptionally hardy, and is overwhelmingly flexible; it is very difficult to kill.
When mature, emerald shield-shaped capsules grow at the end of short, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the early autumn to release thousands of spores.

It is suitable for creating tough, hard-wearing textiles
