Indigo

Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in its leaves)

This small fruit tree grows up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) tall and lives for up to 45 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 67 years old. It is somewhat resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a wide, straight trunk covered in hard, smooth, brown and grey bark, and inside, the light wood is black.

The numerous branches are short stubs and are covered with very large amounts of miniature, slender, pointed leaves with serrated edges. The leaves themselves are brown on the edges and indigo at the center.

In early spring, it produces thick bunches of small, purple blossoms with asymmetrical petals with a bell-shaped floral cup. They are sturdy and have a mildly strong scent that smells like onion.

In mid-autumn it produces small, finger-like fruit. The soft turquoise skin is thick and overwhelmingly bitter, and the slightly crunchy lime flesh is salty and oily. The orange seed is tiny and sits at the end of the fruit.

The roots are shallow and grow straight down, and overall the tree is rigid and brittle.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together densely, with patches of undergrowth between them.

It is suitable for making baskets and the like
