It takes 42 years for the moss green stems to mature, by which point they often have a diameter of 4.1 feet (1.2 meters) and are rough and prickly.
The needle-like, leathery leaves reach up to 3.7 feet (1.1 meters) in length. They are aquamarine and orange, and have toothed edges.
During late spring, the creeper produces a handful of average subtle purple flowers.
The trunk and branches are covered in large spikes.
