Amber

This small fruit tree grows up to 8 feet (2.4 meters) tall and lives for up to 35 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 67 years old. It is very resistant to destructive insect infestation but susceptible to disease.

It has a flexible, straight trunk covered in thick, ridged, dark green bark, and inside, the very dense wood is pine-coloured.

The branches trail down across the ground and are covered with large amounts of tiny, needle-like leaves with tattered edges. The leaves themselves are dark grey at the bottom and slate with azure streaks at the top.

In early spring, it produces thick bunches of large, amber blossoms with umbrella-shaped shaped petals. They fall easily and have a delicate scent that smells like pot-purri.

In mid-autumn it produces very large, stiff, pointed fruit. The fuzzy hazel skin is stretchy and sweet, and the soft pale purple flesh is slightly savoury and syrupy. The white seed is very large and sits at the end of the fruit.

The roots spread far and go deep underground, and overall the tree is rigid and brittle.

Forests of this species feature well-spaced trees, with the space between them filled with thick undergrowth.
