Emerald Trumpet

Flower type: Biennial (Stores water in its stem)

This short flower grows up to 5 inches (13 cm) tall. Its emerald stem is thin and straight with a curved tip, and the large, moss green leaves are needle-like with smooth edges. A pair of leaves grow at the base of the flower head.

1 to 3 medium-sized flowers grow on alternate sides up the length of the stem. The flowers are 3 cm (1.2 inches) wide, with brown petals that gradient shift to yellow on the outer edge. The central disk is light brown. The flower head is shaped like a trumpet made up of 11 widely spaced, round-tipped petals. They detach easily.

It has an intensely strong scent that smells like new books, and it has lots of pollen; it can can cause allergic reactions. It is pollinated by a small species of bird.
